Hi, is there an English win xp "networking" news group.

Hi,

On a network of one win 98 PC and one win XP, (agreed not that large a
network!!) is it possible to view the other screen to view what is being
displayed in real time.

Also, is it possible to access the other computer as if you were using
remote
assistance.

I already have remote assistance installed on this win 98 pc.

I am having trouble with the remote assistance, I cannot even connect the
two pc's that are on this network.(with remote assistance that is)

When I try to launch RA I am asked to type in the computer name or choose
from the drop box, when I drop the box I get "browse for more", where I can
see the network, but the computers are not listed (not even if I click on
the + sign to expand it).

I have entered the name of the other PC - the winXP PC - by typing it in and
even typed in it's IP address but still no joy!!

Have you any ideas on how to fault find the problem.

I assume that if I type in ipconfig into dos prompt the 10.0.0.7 is the ip
address for this computer, The xp pc lists 10.0.0.14 as it's ip address.

"Haggis has suggested using http://www.realvnc.com/ would this be a better
option.

Something simple that does the job well would be best.

Many thanks

Steve

NetMeeting works well, if you're not too bothered about what the desktop
wallpaper looks like.

Start > Run > conf

Hi Jon,

Thanks for the reply,

Have done:- >Start > Run > conf, and a window opens with a "General.idf"
file and icon.

When I double click/or right click, it asks which program to open with.

Also, what will this prog' allow me to do?

Cheers

Weird. Never seen that.

Usually you just follow the prompts to get the main program, and from there
the help documentation will tell you all you need to know.

You can use it for the equivalent of Remote Desktop, as you initially asked.

Thanks Jon,

Sorry about the e-mail I meant to post on here.

When I >Start > Run > conf, as I say, a window opens with a "General.idf"
file and icon.

It is in a window with "config" in the top title bar, the address is
C:\WINDOWS\CONFIG

I guess I am in the correct window, but as I say, the icon does not run when
double clicked.

SHOULD the "General.idf" be there or is it miss placed??

The icon looks like a length of camera film and there is some music notes on
the five lines like you find in a piano song book.

I have looked on the net, and it looks like the extension could be either an
Identification File or more likely a MIDI Instruments Definition File
(Microsoft).

I have been unable to discover what program it should open with to check
what it is.

As well as sorting this out, could we take a few steps back to my original
post.

As my original question was >>>is it possible to view the other screen to
view what is being
displayed in real time.
..........Also, is it possible to access the other computer as if you were
using remote assistance.<<<<<

As I have remote desktop connection installed on this PC and on the XP PC
and that I could use the utility to connect to other remote PC's, would it
not be sensible to get this working.

At present I can choose from >>remote desktop connection (already on both
computers and compatible with many others)
http://www.realvnc.com/ would this be a better option.
Start > Run > conf.

Baring in mind my original brief, which would be the best direction to go?

Is this the best newsgroup for this or is there a more suitable one??

Many thanks

Steve

Sorry about the delay. Only just spotted this response.

The file to be run is 'conf.exe' and should be located in these
locations.....

C:\Program Files\NetMeeting\conf.exe
C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386\conf.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache\conf.exe

The 'general.idf' is a bit of a red herring - ignore it for now [unless you
want to repost on its significance].

You can use 'realvnc' if you like, but from memory it's pretty slow.
