I am trying to reload win XP due to previous version not booting up properly.
(no icons on screen) however during loading programme it gets to a point
(about 34 mins to go) whilst loading driver details it suddenly stops and
comes up with an error message. clicking ok to get rid causes programme to
start again till it gets to same point again comming up with same fault
any ideas

sounds like a scratched or dirty installation disk. try cleaning it with a
damp, lint free cloth, wiping radially, from the center to the edge. or use a
disk cleaning device. if it is scratched, you may have to get a polishing kit.

This is often caused by having unnecessary USB devices connected
during the installation.

No, it doesn't. This is a well-known and documented problem caused by
having unnecessary USB devices connected during the installation.

i had never heard of that, thanks for correcting me. so, while it is a
documented problem, i wouldnt exactly call it well known. and my first
reaction to an installation failure is to check the media, not go searching
the web for bugs in the software.
