Reloading XP

Help - I have XP for Home on a Dell 4600. My machine was infected with viruses (25) and Norton Utilities cleaned 19 of the 25. I deleted the remaing 6 files that I quarentened

The problem I have is when I boot up the computer, my desk top displays, but no icons or drives work. The system just keeps crunching. this was the same problem before I ran virus scan

I can work on the system in SAFE MODE, hence how I ran Norton Virus Scan

I think I have to reload XP on my machine to get it to work again, but I am afraid that I will lose all my data. Is this true or is reloading XP save my data and only replace the execution files?

If you have a oem disk you probably do not have the option of a repair
install. This type of install will repair the operating system , and will
not delete files and folders. Back up your files , folders and settings
before you do a reformat and reinstall , cause that will erase everything.

Try a Repair Installation, I think Dell has this capability:
