registration failure

Thanks for any useful advice. My problem:
After my laptop was infected by a virus, my brother-in-law suggested
reformatting the hard drive and reloading Windows -which he was kind
enough to do for me. Unfortunately he reloaded the Windows XP from my
desktop computer instead of the Windows 2000 Pro from my laptop.
I thought all was well - I was asked to re-register Windows which I
though I had successfully done. However at the end of 30 days a nasty
surprise: no operating system working.
Does this mean I have lost a month's work? Is there a way to retrieve
my files before I reload the correct version of Windows?
Thanks again for your help.

A program like Acronis Drive Image can back them up and then you restore only the data ater the reinstall. Why did you not back them up before this if they are so valuable, a good lesson here
