Truthfully - it won't matter. No one will ever know.
Since you "have to" and "need to", it's not like you have any choice - go
for it. Deal with problems if and when they arise.

Worst case - you may have to activate your copy via telephone rather than by
Internet.
Be sure you have your firewall on before you ever connect to the Internet.
Install SP2 ASAP - you'll be better off.
Get the latest drivers for your hardware straight from each manufacturer -
not Microsoft.

Thank you Shenan!
Of your answer i understand that i always? can call MS and activate my
legal! copy. Then the problem is small! I will buy me a new MB and install
my new HD.

If your license of Windows XP is retail (not OEM) and/or you haven't
activated in 120 days and/or your story makes sense...
Yes.

If it has been more than 120 days since you activated, you won't even have
to call - Internet Activation should work.

The only "catch-22" is if the copy of Windows XP you have was "BIOS
locked" - which basically means it was an OEM copy put together so
specifically for your current hardware that it working on another system is
almost not going to happen..

Thank You again Shenan!
I have "built" the pc my self (by parts) and i have bought XP (uppgrade)
myself, for longer then 120days. I was worry´d about serialnumbers on
motherboard and HD.... The CPU is the same. The problem with the MB (ASUS
P4S8X / Promice PDC20376 / FastTrack376) is that it has RAID activated and
i dont need it any more. With RAID it seems that i can´t use my new S-ATA
disk....

Is it best to have the old disk in PC when i do the installation of XP on
the new S-ATA disk, or not?

Since you bought an Upgrade edition, it's retail. This means you can move
it from machine to machine as long as it is never installed on more than one
(according to the EULA) as many times as you wish to install it with no more
than maybe a phone call to reactivate - although usually you can reactivate
merely by using an internet connection.

As for being best whether the old drive is in there or not during the
install.. Since you are going to have a fresh install - I would leave the
drive out - install your OS and get it patched/etc - put it in there to get
whatever data you need off it and either take it back out or format it and
use it as a backup if you so desire (if i am understanding you correctly
that is. *smile*.)
