clone XP to new HD, will this work

Alex

Hi,, I've read a lot about using Ghost snd other programs but I can't
afford to buy them and the freeware versions seem complicated.
Therefore, Can I:

1. install the new HD alone,
2. install XP
3. reinstall my old HD as a slave or master on the other IDE
4. boot the new XP
5. using explorer copy all the files from the old HD to a temporary
directory in the new HD
6. reinstall the old HD as originally and boot the old XP
7. copy all the temporary files to the right place on the new HD
8. remove the old HD and boot the new XP

will it work??

You may wish to visit the support website of the manufacturer of your
new hard drive and see if they have a free utility program that you can use to
accomplish this task. For example, if you have a new Western Digital drive,
you can download their free Data Lifeguard Tools which includes "drive-to-drive
copy capability" (Ref: http://support.wdc.com/download/).

xxClone is a simplified version of xxCopy, and it was
written for copying hard drives. You can download it
free if you sign up as a beta tester. xxClone has been
in beta test for about 2 years, now, and just about all
the bugs have been found (YMMV). Check it out at
www.xxClone.com .

You'd better check those links, Carey. Free software
is becoming a thing of the past.

excellent advice, thanks Carey

I used seagate's utility & it seems to have worked brilliantly.
(although the new drive doesn't seem to be recognised on the primary
ide cable so I connected it to the other one, don't know if there is
any drawback to that yet.)

Did you reset the jumper on the old HD so that the
new HD is Master and the old HD is Slave (to 1)
differentiate the HDs for the IDE controller, and
2) to put the new HD 1st in the boot sequence)?
