Registry problem

Hi Doug

I bought Registry Mechanic from PC Tools and gave it to my brother to load
on his PC. He ran the whole programme which included a registry scan, defrag
etc. His PC went down so he did a system restore. However, the drawer to his
DVD player/burner now opens and closes whenever he opens a program, and
sometimes stays half-closed. There is nothing wrong with Reg Scan - it worked
on my PC. He has a Dell desktop with Windows XP Sp2. What fix can he do
please to get his DVD working again?

Thanks

Hi

Registry 'cleaning' programs can be problematic and shouldn't be used with
XP. Suggest your brother goes back into Registry Mechanic and tries the
'undo' option if available. System Restore won't help as that only monitors
system files.

To undo the damage done by snake oil registry "cleaners," it's quite
often necessary to wipe the hard drive and reinstall the OS. You might
try performing a repair installation first, though, to see if that can
clear up the problems induced by the registry "cleaner."

Thanks Bruce. Well I have to say I installed it on my PC and my Dad's and ran
Reg Mech and it worked fine. I think my brother was unlucky. Thanks for your
contribution.

Hi Will

Thanks for this. I have to say that I think my brother has been a bit
unlucky since I installed Reg Mechanic on my PC and my Dad's and it works
fine. I didn't know this couldn't be done on XP. Maybe he'll try the 'undo'
option. Cheers for your help anyway.

Granted, most registry "cleaners" won't cause problems every time
they're used, but the potential for harm is always there. And, since no
registry "cleaner" has ever been demonstrated to do any good (think of
them like treating the flu with chicken soup - there's no real medicinal
value, but it provides a warming placebo effect), I generally tell
people that the risks far out-weigh the non-existent benefits.

I will concede that a good registry scanning tool, in the hands of an
experienced and knowledgeable technician or hobbyist can be a useful
time-saving diagnostic tool, as long as it's not allowed to make any
changes automatically. But I really don't think that there are any
registry cleaners that are truly safe for the general public to use.
Experience has proven just the opposite: such tools simply are not safe
in the hands of the inexperienced user.

You are looking at this the wrong way. You and your dad's systems got
"lucky" that nothing went wrong - at least not yet. Return it or toss it.
