Registry - DVD Firmware and Win 2K Pro SP4 upgrade - PC slows down dramatically

Hi.
I have (or probably created) a problem, that may have to do with the DVD
device on my PC. I use W2000 Pro with SP3. I also have a Pioneer DVR-108 DVD
writer and a TEAC W540E CD-Writer. Recently I updated the DVD with the new
firmware (1.20) instead of the old one 1.06. The procedure ended correctly.
But afterwards, when I tried to apply the Windows 2000 SP4, the SP4
installation ended in the middle, with a message I did not note down
unfortunately. Anyway, I restarted the PC, and I noticed that the SP4 is
displayed when I right click for the properties on 'My Computer' icon, which
looked suspicious to me. Any other try to install SP4 is aborted with a
message about ism.dll

After that, both the CD/DVD units make Windows execution very slow. I
thought the firmware procedure created the problem so I unplugged both
devices and tested them on another PC, but they worked fine (and also the
DVD was found with the correct upgraded firmware version on the other PC, I
searched the registry for that). When plugged in my PC, although they are
recognized through BIOS screen, when Windows loads, the PC becomes VERY slow
(the system process gets 99% time, instead of the System Idle process) and
never gets out of it (like an endless loop). Also I can't get into the
Computer Management window.

From all the above, I think the problem is inside the settings that are left
over in the Registry, but every program about the registry I used to clean
things up (Tuneup Utilities 2006, Registry Mechanic 5.0), just touched
irrelevant settings (MRU lists, start programs, and all those common things
a registry cleaner handles), but not settings about the computer
configuration.

Is there any way to make the registry rebuilt with information about the
devices (LOCAL MACHINE,control sets, etc, without affecting the settings of
installed programs) in order to solve my problem? Searching in the registry,
I found records about the DVD with both the old and the new firmware
version. Being a begginer about the registry, I don't want to touch any of
them, but I really feel the problem is around there, since the devices
themselves work OK in another PC.

Any other suggestion is highly appreciated. I may be in the wrong path from
the beggining.

TIA

Well, as i mentioned, I now don't have access to any CD/DVD because the
system is so slow when they are plugged in (one at a time, or both
together). Anyway thanks. I'll check the links you sent and get back.

Until then, any other suggestion is more than welcome.

Suggestions only and not guaranteed to "fix" anything. Have
complete backups or better, a disk/partition image and Full
Registry Backups for good measure. YMMV and use at own risk,

Shutdown and remove the DVD (detach power and data cable) and boot
the system (Safe Mode if needed) and in a CMD window issue two
commands:
SET DEVMGR_SHOW_NONPRESENT_DEVICES=1
devmgmt.msc
In the resulting Device Manager console locate the DVD device and

That message text might have been important (for future reference
try to capture such messages) Did you find any Event Log entry
regarding this presumed failure with the SP? Or the
DVD/controller? Is there any Add/Remove entry for the SP4?

You must decide but I am thinking you should try to back out of the
SP next. Try the appropriate MS groups for this question. Last
ditch, there may be a \$KB*$\spuninst\spuninst.exe to try. But get
better advice first. Eventually you should apply the SP4 and the
Security Rollup pack of course.

Alternatively Dave's "Repair Install" should revert but may cause
other difficulties in SP and Updates that will need to be re-
applied. Again, go the proper group for better advice on this SP4

I must stress that this post is FYI and FWIW only as I cannot
recommend any detailed course of action based solely on a News
posting. Many variables and unknowns. Perhaps some ideas to look
into that may help in the long run. Good luck with it.

Thanks for the lengthy reply.

I noticed that the DVD runs OK when I boot from it. (I inserted the Windows
CD and it started the installation procedure - blue DOS screen...)

So the problem is really inside the windows registry. Still, when I boot
normally having the CD/DVD plugged, the PC becomes unusable (99% system
process time). I don't know what kind of things Windows is searching for at
that time, but it takes more than 5 minutes to get to the desktop screen. No
CD/DVDs are displayed in the devices window (add 3-4 minutes to get to this
information).

I 'll try those things you said, and get back.
Can you recommend any good book about the Windows registry? How did you
learn all those tricks?

In addition to the above message,
I can boot from the dvd, but if I boot from a DOS disk with cd rom support,
no CD or DVD drive is recognized
How can this happen?

Which CDROM/DVD device settings can I safely delete from the registry, in
order for these settings to be refreshed (reapplied) at the next reboot?
Should any specific services be ON, in order to do this on restart?
