Do users who buy a system with XP already installed get instructions on
registering it? Two people I know never had the nagging message come up on
their screens.
Derek.

It doesn't matter what type it is , it always has to be done , In your 2
friends case its probably because of the store where they bought their from
has already done it for them , which isn't real a good idea to have done ,
why ? because whomever done it has now seen their license keys but again in
most case its probably okay and safe that they had ... But i rather choose
not to have anyone to registry my windows but me , myself and I ... Your
friends will have to enter their registration one day if they ever choose to
reformat or reinstall windows again ... Ask your friends if they have their
license keys with their windows or bet yet they probably have a product
recovery disc instead if its a brand name computer \

Hi Derek

Do you mean Registering or Activating? If the latter, try the following
from Start>Run to see the status of Activation - some may have been
pre-activated by the PC supplier:

%systemroot%\system32\oobe\msoobe.exe /A

Derek, if you want to Register XP, type the following from Start>Run

%systemroot%\system32\oobe\msoobe.exe /R

The one who bought a computer for the first time three weeks ago has a
product recovery disk. The XP license key sticker is on the side of her
computer but nothing has appeared on her screen asking her to register or
activate the product. The other person has had XP Home installed for about
ten months and again has not been asked.

Hi Derek ... Your friend that just got her preinstall is most likely was
done by the store , which is normal , again though if she ever needs to
reinstall windows or reformat , she going to need to use those license keys
numbers on the side of her computer to reactivate her windows ... Now your
other friend there , If he/she has a license copy of windows which wasn't
bootleg (copy ) , then he/she will also one day need to enter those license
keys whenever they need to reinstall or reformat windows but if he/she has a
bootleg , their been case where they don't need to ever enter those license
keys , again this type of version is illegal and it also doesn't have all
the windows files , which in some case might cause more problems then good

Thanks for your reply, it seemed strange that two people with preinstalled
software did not have to activate/register. I loaded my own version and had
to do it and again when I had to reinstall.
Derek.

Hi ... I am sorry i thought your other friend computer wasn't preinstall ,
In that case both of your friends had the store or where ever they purchased
their computers from installed for them ... Again they will one day in the
future need to register their windows when ever they need to reformat or
reinstall windows ...
