Windows XP Home Addition service pack 3 installation

A

AKA Beau

Subject is upgraded to SP2, no problems. Everytime I try to update to SP3,
either from windows update, automatice updates or downloaded file, the
installations freezes at "RUNNING PROCESSES AFTER INSTALL." No error
messages are generated. Even let the install run for over 18 hrs. XP was
installed from a registered Windows XP home addtion (SP1) disk. Followed all
pre-install instructions to the letter; three times!! with the same results.
Anyone have an idea what my problem could be??

Turn of all AV software including Windows Defender
before installing SP3. Use the download file as opposed
to Windows Update.

Next read all the prerequisites.listed below, some of which
you may have missed or not been aware of.

If you use Zone Alarm Firewall (Free or Paid) then update to
the most recent version.

Internet Explorer: (From Shenan Stanley MS MVP)
"If you have installed Windows Internet Explorer® 7 or a beta version of
Internet Explorer 8, and then install Windows XP SP3, you cannot uninstall
Internet Explorer. To avoid this, ensure Internet Explorer 7 or a beta
version of Internet Explorer 8 is not installed before installing Windows XP
SP3. If you have already encountered this issue, uninstall Windows XP SP3,
uninstall Internet Explorer, and then reinstall Windows XP SP3."

Windows XP Media Center Edition 2002: (From Shenan Stanley MS MVP)
"If you install Windows XP SP3 on a computer running Windows XP Media Center

1st,if any program seems to idle itself after 10 minutes or so,end the
program.
Running the pc in a "open loop" for 18 hrs as you did, will damage hardware &
software....Either way,try installing soon after you 1st start pc,dont run
anything
but SP3,also,has windows installer been updated, the latest is v4.5 install
that
before,& once installed,go to run,type:services.msc In msc,scroll to
installer,
double click, set to "auto start" from manual, start service, close out msc.

Which directions did you follow? Best practice is to clean boot before
the upgrade. Did you use Windows Update or the standalone installer?

instructions to the letter; three times!! with the same results. I followed
every suggestion given to me on this forum, but each time the same results
the
installations freezes at "RUNNING PROCESSES AFTER INSTALL." I treid
installing from windows update, automatice updates, and lastly downloaded the
file. No error
messages were generated, however the same unsucessful result. What is a
clean boot?

Again, *which* instructions? You need to identify them for us! Please

How to configure Windows XP to start in a "clean boot" state:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310353

There is no need to follow Step 4.

The main reason for clean booting is you don't want an antivirus (or
similar) program interfering.

Here is virtually everything you need to know:

For those who have PCs with AMD processors and OEM images, especially
HPs:

Success!! XP SP3 quickly loaded while in "clean Boot." I'm far from an
expert, but think my NERO INCD Ver 5.9.8.0 may have been the guilty party
stopping the install. Thanks to All. Regards

Glad to hear about your success, and thanks for posting back. Now make
sure you undo the clean boot configuration!
