System File Check after Service Pack 3 install

S

I installed Windows XP Pro SP2 from a CD and later automatic updates
installed SP3 on my PC. Now when I run System File Check it first tells me to
insert my XP Pro CD, then tells me it's the wrong CD. What is the correct way
to successfully run System File Check after Service Pack 3 has been installed?

You'll need to slipstream your original WinXP Media with the SP3 update.

Have a look at "Autostreamer".

You'll need the full file patch

It certainly would, since SFC is trying to compare SP3 files to an SP2 CD.
It's doing exactly what it's supposed to do

You are performing the steps correctly, though you need to be comparing the
SP3 install with an SP3 CD, and you can make one easily via slipstreaming.
There are a number of tools to help with this; google "slipstream XP SP3"
for details. You might also try pointing it to the i386 folder on your
hard disk instead.

For slipstreaming, the first step is do download the complete Service Pack.

You need to Slipstream a SP3 service pack into your existing Windows CD.

I held off a while on doing this because my instincts correctly told me that
following the posted advice wasn't going to work. I went the AutoStreamer
route and made a bootable DVD that indeed boots. The README.HTM file on the
DVD says "This release of Microsoft® Windows® XP includes Service Pack 3
(SP3)." Of course running SFC /SCANNOW still tells me I have the wrong
version of XP on the CD. What is totally obnoxious is that there's no easy
way to kill the SFC process which will not close no matter what I do,
including trying "End Process" in Windows Task Manager. The only thing
unusual about the DVD is that I put the manufacturer's drivers and a couple
of other goodies inside the C:\$Autostreamer$\ValueAdd folder by chosing the
"I want to manually customize my installation" option in AutoStreamer. Oh
well, at least I have a bootable XP Pro SP3 installation disc.

Close SFC by holding down the skip button with the mouse and hittingCTRL at the same time until it runs out
