When I dial up my internet connection a message box says "verifying
name and password" then a second message box says "registering your
computer on the network" which takes about a minute to do. This second
message just recently started. My computer is not on any network. Any
suggestions on how to stop my computer from registering on network. Is
it a win 2000 setting. My internet provider suggests over installing
windows. Any help greatly appreciated.

Try

Goto
Start
Settings
Control Panel
Network & Dial up Connections

right click on the connection and select
Properties

select the Networking tab

ensure only

Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)

is ticked

hope that helps

That's the normal message sequence using RAS to dial into an ISP. The
one-minute delay seems long. You might check with your ISP tech support;
they can watch your connection being made, tell you what abnormal
handshaking they see.

Settings were as you described so that's not the problem.Dan Seur says
that's the normal message, but 4 of my friends have dial up connection
and none have this problem, once username and password are
verified, your connected, no registering of computer on network.Could
be some software I have installed has altered some settings somewere.
I will over install windows and see what happens. Thanks for your
help.

That "registering" msg will flash by (often too quickly to notice if
you're not staring at the "verifying" msg) when things are normal. It's
been displayed on my systems with NT351, NT4, and now W2k. Perhaps your
friends just haven't seen it. I still suggest a telcon with the ISP... :-)

I over installed windows, still the same problem,so I created another
partition and installed win2k plus browser, antivirus etc
only.Everthing works perfectly.Still none the wiser if windows or some
other software caused the problem, but hey that's computers.Thank you
for all your help.
