Windows 2000 bug?

Another dial-ip problem has occured. After successfully connecting to
the Internet, sometimes, when I disconnect, some corruption appears to
occur and the whole system from then on works sluggishly. Shutting down
takes an age, Booting up works until I get to the "Preparing network
connections'. This stage hangs for about 3 minutes, (instead of
appearing for a second) until booting resumes.to normal. The Events
Viewer show 'DNS Client Service hung on starting'.

Once fully booted, if I dial up, after verification I arrive at the
'Registering your computer on the Internet' message. The system then
hangs for about 3 minutes then the connection fails with 'error 619'.
Booting from cold doesn't fix the problem either. If I restore my
system state from a previous backup before the trouble started, it
still doesn't cure the problem. The only solution is to to a fast
repair from the Windows system disk. But it is very tedious to have to
keep doing this.

DoesWindows 2000 have a bug when using dial-up?

No it doesn't. Why are you running the DNS Client service?

Because it enabes automatically on booting up, until I run into the
problems as outlined. I wasn't even aware of this service, but I have
disabled it now. Looking back, I've seen many other people have come
unstuck with the same problem. Would that have been the reason why my
system was getting screwed up?

My modem is constantly active even after fully loading a page. It seems
to be sending data far more than receiving That doesn't seem right
either.

* No it would not "screw up" the system. Just mis-configuration.

It means when this service is loaded on booting it is set to automatic,
ie not manual or disabled

In which case, the problems that I outlined in my op can't be
connected with DNSCS running
automatically.

Glad to hear it's sorted.

DND Client Service is enabled by default and is set to automatic startup.
Stopping that service from running should not be a problem but if it hangs
at startup that issue needs to be addressed. And no this is not a bug in
Windows 2000 it is likely a bug in the Connect software you are using or
with the Modem. Is that WinPOET?

He is not a troll. He just didn't take the time with you. We really do not
have much to go on.
