reformat hd,ntfs partition question

I am trying to reformat laptop using the recovery discs. All seems to go
well until I get to a screen that shows existing partitions and unpartioned
space on the computer. the screen says C:partion1 [NTFS] 38154 MB <12959
MB free>.
Choices are:
set up windows xp on the selected item
create a partition in the unpartioned space
delete the selected partion

When I choose setup on the selected item, I get the following message;
You chose to install xp on a partition that contains another operating
system.Installing wxp on this partition might cause the other operating
system to function improperly.
Not sure what to do, I am trying to do a clean install, booted from the
recovery disc that came with the computer, and choose reinstall.
Can anyone advise ?

Your recovery procedure seems superior to most. It is allowing you 'preserve
old data' (which would include the old windows folder, and show two boot
options on startup) You will not be able to use the old system, and should
remove it from the boot.ini file (with msconfig.exe), but installing to the
existing partition will work fine for the new setup.

You should decide if you want to preserve data, and fool with a cleanup of
some stuff. or just go ahead and take the option to remove the partition,
create a new partition, and install clean.

Thank you. I do not need any files from old system, would rather install
clean. Can you explain how to remove the partition and create a new one, or
direct me to web site to do this?

When you were on that screen showing the choices, you arrow down to the
'delete existing partition' option and press enter, then the next screen will
have the option to create a new partition, and later, windows will be written
to it.

in addition to the helpful tips provided
in your thread, it is highly likely that the maker
of your laptop has a website dedicated
to the specific model number of your
laptop.

you should review it as they may have
additional information and updates that
have since been provided after the
acquisition of your laptop, including
but not limited to the process of
recovering or restoring your laptop.

Thank you. I do not need any files from old system, would rather install
clean. Can you explain how to remove the partition and create a new one, or
direct me to web site to do this?
