Recycle bin woes

AltaEgo

Hi all

I noticed my recycle bin shows 20 files in 10 folders occupying 421kb space
but, these don't show when I open the recycle bin.

Safer Networks program, Foldalyzer, shows content copied below sig.

If I use a CMD window and run
dir c:\recycler\\S-1-5-21-220523388-507921405-725345543-1004
The result is 4 Dir listings:

"05/04/2009 06:09 PM <DIR> Dc127

.... three similar <DIR> listings Dc128; Dc129, and Dc2

0 Files
4 Dirs"

Dir C:\recycler\\S-1-5-21-220523388-507921405-725345543-1004\Dc2 allowed me
to find and Del *.* some jpg files in that directory but the recycler size
on C:\ remained at 20 files, ten folders 421kb after Dir confirmed delete
was successful. Other directories returned no files.

Contributing to my worries if I now delete a file, it does not show in the
bin nor in the file listing when viewed with Foldalyzer (nor the Dir listing
in the CMD window). Recycle bin properties are set to use one setting for
all drives. "Do not move files to the Recycle Bin ... is NOT checked; the
slider is set to 6% and "Display delete confirmation" is NOT checked.

Am I able to kill the recycle bin and all its contents and restore then
replace the recycle bin with a new one later - kind of "forget all you know,
let's start afresh" or do I need to do something else to fix this?

Oh! BTW

1) I moved all files off F:\ drive recently, converted its FAT32 to NTFS,
formatted and moved files back. F:\ recycler was not included.

2) H:\ drive is a Maxtor.USB connected drive that runs automatic backup. I
know it does not allow me to delete some of its files when directory
structure is deep. Could it be that something here is causing the problem?

3) Aside from manual deletion, I found
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/168570/en-us.
I am logged on using and account with administrator access (but not runsafe
and log into administrator account); I opened recycler properties using
Explorer; I can see General and Global tabs. I not see Ownership Tab. I
plan to run safe and log in as Administrator when I finish this.

Nggaaaaaah!

Just ran a dir on c:\recycler again. Tried to delete *.* - "unable to
delete - locked by another process". Closed CMD. Opened it again. Running
Dir now shows nothing!

It's a glitch that happens once-in-a-while. Do not worry about it, it's
a tiny amount of space and the problem WILL clear up by itself after
using the recycle bin a few more times.

Just pretend there's nothing in the recycle bin and continue to delete
stuff and empty the bin.

After a few more 'empties' in normal use (i.e. don't try to rush it) it
will clear by itself .

OK (drawn out and slow). Actually, I dove back in when I rebooted.

Ran CMD

Typed C:\recycler and pressed enter Hey presto! Recycler opened as a normal
folder.
Changed the option to view system and hidden objects. result was a batch of
those horribly named folders.
Navigated through these one-by-one.
Finally found my way to a folder that contained the jpg files I thought I
had deleted in the CMD window previously.
Highlighted the lot. Pressed shift delete and they disappeared.
Made sure every strange folder was empty (they were) and closed.

Back to Explorer C:\Recycler properties 7 files, 10 folders 22.1k. More
importantly. When a file gets deleted it appears in the bin. Wish I knew
what those 7 files were but, I'll heed your advice to "not worry about it"
.... until it upsets me again <bg>.

The remaining problem would be to find ownership of the recycle bin so I can
check the settings as suggested by
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/168570/en-us.

The only problem with going into and exploring the Recycle Bin is that
not always can files be deleted from there - sometimes the system says
that the files are currently in use.

I did not want to give you advice to try and chase the files and face
other potential problems when they would have cleaned up by themselves
after a short while of normal use anyway.

I am glad that you have sorted out your problem, though.

OK (drawn out and slow). Actually, I dove back in when I rebooted.

Ran CMD

Typed C:\recycler and pressed enter Hey presto! Recycler opened as a
normal folder.
Changed the option to view system and hidden objects. result was a
batch of those horribly named folders.
Navigated through these one-by-one.
Finally found my way to a folder that contained the jpg files I
thought I had deleted in the CMD window previously.
Highlighted the lot. Pressed shift delete and they disappeared.
Made sure every strange folder was empty (they were) and closed.

Back to Explorer C:\Recycler properties 7 files, 10 folders 22.1k.
More importantly. When a file gets deleted it appears in the bin.
Wish I knew what those 7 files were but, I'll heed your advice to "not
worry about it" ... until it upsets me again <bg>.

The remaining problem would be to find ownership of the recycle bin so
I can check the settings as suggested by

Just pretend there's nothing in the recycle bin and continue to

After a few more 'empties' in normal use (i.e. don't try to rush it)
it will clear by itself .

Hi all

I noticed my recycle bin shows 20 files in 10 folders occupying
421kb space but, these don't show when I open the recycle bin.

Safer Networks program, Foldalyzer, shows content copied below sig.

If I use a CMD window and run
dir c:\recycler\\S-1-5-21-220523388-507921405-725345543-1004
The result is 4 Dir listings:

"05/04/2009 06:09 PM <DIR> Dc127

... three similar <DIR> listings Dc128; Dc129, and Dc2

0 Files
4 Dirs"

Dir C:\recycler\\S-1-5-21-220523388-507921405-725345543-1004\Dc2
allowed me to find and Del *.* some jpg files in that directory but
the recycler size on C:\ remained at 20 files, ten folders 421kb
after Dir confirmed delete was successful. Other directories
returned no files.

Contributing to my worries if I now delete a file, it does not show
in the bin nor in the file listing when viewed with Foldalyzer (nor
the Dir listing in the CMD window). Recycle bin properties are set
to use one setting for all drives. "Do not move files to the Recycle
Bin ... is NOT checked; the slider is set to 6% and "Display delete
confirmation" is NOT checked.

Am I able to kill the recycle bin and all its contents and restore
then replace the recycle bin with a new one later - kind of "forget
all you know, let's start afresh" or do I need to do something else
to fix this?

Oh! BTW

1) I moved all files off F:\ drive recently, converted its FAT32 to
NTFS, formatted and moved files back. F:\ recycler was not included.

2) H:\ drive is a Maxtor.USB connected drive that runs automatic
backup. I know it does not allow me to delete some of its files when
directory structure is deep. Could it be that something here is
causing the problem?

3) Aside from manual deletion, I found
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/168570/en-us.
I am logged on using and account with administrator access (but not
runsafe and log into administrator account); I opened recycler
properties using Explorer; I can see General and Global tabs. I not
see Ownership Tab. I plan to run safe and log in as Administrator
when I finish this.

Nggaaaaaah!

Just ran a dir on c:\recycler again. Tried to delete *.* - "unable
to delete - locked by another process". Closed CMD. Opened it again.
Running Dir now shows nothing!

I could possibly wear a few bytes wasted in the recycle bin but, the problem
of files not showing in the bin when deleted was a concern. Now I think
about it, the important files will be backed up to Maxtor unless I fluke
poor timing on the delete so maybe an erratic bin isn't as important as I
first thought. I guess I could make it hard delete if it plays up again.
Strangely, I would be happier with the risk of a stupid deletion that to
live with something that works erratically and may or may not contain a
deleted file. Perhaps it would restore some DOS discipline.

Must go and watch the cricket highlights - c'mon Aussies.
