recovery for win xp

Any help would be appreciated...

My computer decided to no longer boot, and gives me the following message
instead: "Windows could not start because the following file is missing or
corrupt: \Windows\System32\Config\System"

I've tried the Recovery Console from the XP CD-ROM, but at the command
prompt I cannot bring up the directory for the hard-drive, and when I try to
make a temp folder it tells me access denied.

I really don't want to have to format the drive and lose everything on it,
so any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Will,

But that's the article I tried to follow. When I get to step 5 in part 1,
that's where I tried to input "md tmp" (without the quotes of course), and it
gives me "Access Denied."

I'm running two hard-drives as one in a RAID Array, could that be affecting
this? I'm only a single-boot computer, and it shows the c: drive if I use
the "MAP" command in the Recovery Console, but it acts as if I'm not logged
in as an Administrator. I had removed the Administrator Password on my last
successful logon, so I shouldn't need to use one for Admin access to the
drive, yes?
