Trouble with Windows XP Recovery Console

Because i get this errror message when i start my computer:

Windows XP could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM

I need to use the Recovery Console.

But when the dos command starts up after I click on "r" for repair after
booting Windows from the boot disc, I'm never asked for my adminstator's
password, like the MS K-base article states. All that happens is, I get the
c:\ prompt.

When i type "md temp" in the c:\ prompt, i get "access denied"

Obviously something is wrong since every article states I'm supposed to
choose a number for which windows system and then my admin. password.

Ang suggestions?

Thanks

alfotero:
After you enter "R" to enter the Recovery Console, the screen will display
the following, or something very similar...

1. C:\WINDOWS
Which Windows installation would you like to log on to?

At the cursor, just type "1" (no quotes) and press Enter.

When you're next asked to enter the Administrator password, just press Enter
(assuming there's no password), or enter whatever password you previously
established.

You should get the C:\WINDOWS prompt at this point.

Now you can enter whatever commands you need.

Can you please walk me through the beginning? How do I get to that screen
that prompts me for the password? I have gotten there before but dont
remember how, since I have tried so many times.........I dont remember my
password ( i hope there is simply no password previously set by me)

Pls help me! Im just trying to boot up one more time to drag a couple of my
files to the external hard drive because I just bought a Mac and wont be
using the PC once I rescue my files.

..........In my different attempts at fixing this problem, I have also ended
up in the blue screen that reinstalls Windows XP (the one where you press F8
to get going) BUT when I select the C drive to reset XP it wont let me......
it tells me to do it in unpartitioned space for which there is only an 8MB
option for which it tells me there is not enough space. So that whole Blue
Screen scenario seems not workable.
