RECOVERY CONSOLE

I am using Windows XP Recovery Console to confirm that my hard disk or file
system is not damaged.

I am prompted to hit R to repair the installation.

Can anyone tell me whether I will lose data on the hard disk by doing this?

Many thanks

You do not want to perform a reapir installation (at least not yet)

First run chkdsk without any switches...

If you see a few errors...go ahead and run chkdsk /r to run the repair of
your files system

but if chkdsk (no switches) sees tons of errors...running chkdsk /r may
write your data to .chk files...
though it may be logically correct...your data will be gone!

A Windows XP repair will only replace the core system files. I once
did 3 repairs in a row to get a system up and all the files and even
the desktop image were just as the user had left them before the
repair.

Why don't you just go to computer management to see if your file system is
dirty or not
it takes all of 30 seconds.
Admin tools>computer management>disk management>done.

Thanks Mike.

How can I do this if I can't boot Windows up though?

No where in your original post did you mention that your computer will not
boot!
