Hi ,

I Can't get Recovery Console to work ,
i did install it on my hard drive ,
when at boot time i select "Recovery Console" ,
it just shut down after the keyboard detection (i think) .

Exept that my XP work fine (it is not a copy) ,
also i can't use repair ( or even a fresh install ) with my CD .

I tried another hard drive with XP on it ,
and the problem is the same when it come to use
Recovery Console.

I tried another keyboard with no luck .

What is the problem here ?

Check that you have a line like

C:\CMDCONS\BOOTSECT.DAT="Microsoft Windows Recovery Console" /cmdcons

in your c:\boot.ini file

and that you have a hidden folder c:\cmdcons

run recovery console from win cd!

How did you manage to install recovery console?

can you boot to win cd?

I had this issue once, it was apparently due to a corruption of the file
BOOTSECT.DAT inside the cmdcons folder. I don't know how it got corrupted,
but I did a reinstall of the console and compared everything w/ the old,
and BOOTSECT.DAT was the only thing different. The fresh install worked
fine.

As a result, I try to boot into RC every month or so just to be sure it's
still usable. It has been so far...

For sure did not work.
How did you manage to install recovery console?

using the command line :

x:\i386\winnt32.exe /cmdcons ,

where is x is my CD drive
can you boot to win cd?

On this puter I can't use this CD in fact ,
I am sure there is something wrong with the keyboard ,
but can't figure out what .

But if your question is is my CD bootable , the answer is yes
I just can't use it , and even Barte PE failed to load it shut down after
hardware detection
..

The problem with the recovery console crash is that there is no message
about
what is the problem , after xp hardware detection the cursor start
blinking
then my computer shut down , not even a BSOD .

One thing i fogot to say , if in c:\cmdcons I rename the file about the
french keyboard
then i get a blue screen telling me that the file cant be load (or mising
dont remember )

Oh and yes I used memtest => no error

TY for the answer

Professionnel" /fastdetect
C:\CMDCONS\BOOTSECT.DAT="Console de récupération Microsoft Windows XP"
/cmdcons

Cool for you ,

look i tried with another disc from another PC with RC working on it ,
=> not working on this puter.

TY for the idea .

Did you converted your primary partition from FAT32 to NTFS after you
installed the Recovery Console? In that case, you need to reinstall
it.

That is because:

1) You converted your primary partition from FAT32 to NTFS after you
installed the Recovery Console, or

2) You upgraded your hard drive to a bigger one with a different
geometry, cloning the old (smaller) one into the new, (bigger) one,
after you installed the Recovery Console.

Here is the story of this disc :

First I had a Redhat on it ,
then I did delete Linux and install W2k on it , NTFS formated
then I did a fresh install of XP using NTFS .

what other options are available when you boot up?

is there anything other than recovery console?

can you boot into Windows normally or does it fail, too?

The options are recovery console and XP pro.

XP pro work fine .

I am pretty sure that if I attempt to install XP on a new formated disc on
this puter
it will not work.

boot.ini looks fine.

You could try uninstalling the Recovery Console, from within XP Pro, and
then reinstalling it, when the drive is attached to the computer, you want
it to work on. (eg by copying the i386 folder to the hard drive, using
another computer, and executing the recovery console install command, if you
don't have a cdrom)

I already tried that .

May be the only thing I did not try is to test this hard drive on another
puter ,
and then try using the recovery console or the XP CDROM ,
but even if it works , will not solve my problem.

In short you don't think this is likely a hardware problem , am I correct ?

Could well be a hardware / BIOS problem. But better to exhaust all avenues
of standard software related approaches first eg running chkdsk,
defragmenting etc , before attempting to do things like upgrading firmware,
flashing BIOSes, changing hardware etc. If you have a perfect working
installation of XP Pro, with no other problems, other than the recovery
console not working, then that would suggest a software solution.

If your computer boots into windows normally, WHY are you worried about
Recovery Console?

Why do you want/think that you need to use Recovery Console?

You said you installed another HDD, and wasn't able to use recovery console.
Why would recovery console be available on the new HDD?

Did you install Reovery console on it, also? Where did this HDD come from?
Most of the tine you just can't throw a different HDD and expect it to work!!!

Does the CD drive work in this computer?
do you know how to set computer to boot to cd drive?

Right I do have a very good working installation of XP ,
so I think I will not try anything else to solve the problem.

Because if something goes wrong with my XP , I will not be able to repair or
install XP

Hard drive is comming from the store .
It was on another puter with XP and recovery on it ,
with the network I did erase the cmdcons folder of the other HDD
with the content of the cmdcons folder of this HDD ,
then I installed the other HDD as master on this puter,
it did not work , but PC did not shut down ,
I had only the blinking cursor.
Does the CD drive work in this computer?
do you know how to set computer to boot to cd drive?

Yes the CD drive is OK , and I know how to change the boot sequence.

TY for the answer !
