Recover photos replaced in error

If you select you Replace All in error when downloading photos can you
retreive the old photos which were replaced by the new?
We have two cameras. We downloaded photos from one camera and placed them in
a new folder in My Pictures. Afterwards we downloaded photos from the 2nd
camera into the same folder. The option appeared would we like to replace the
existing photos with the new downloaded ones and we in error selected yes to
all.

If the replace command actually creates a new file, then the old stuff is
still around somewhere. The problem then becomes finding it.

It is my impression that "replace" means exactly that. The
system uses the existing file name and the existing disk sectors. Thus, the
old stuff is gone.

Replaced files are overwritten and
are not recoverable. However, you
may be able to recover the files from
your memory card.

I'm having a problem with this.

When Windows replaces/overwrites files it is only when the filename is the same
as an existing filename..

Did the new photos from camera2 have the same filenames as those from camera1
but were not the same photos?

Hey, Gord,

Just a thought based on the original message...

If you had two cameras that were set to begin
at image #1 each session...it's conceivable
that both cameras could create files with the
same numbers.

When the word *replace* is used it means
proceeding will overwrite the current files.

I 'spose so.

I guess it just never occurred to me that two separate cameras would produce
photos with the same name/numbering system.

I'm going to play with Mrs. Dibben's new camera and see if I can get it produce
same naming/numbering system as mine.

Although they are two different brands/makes of camera so may not get that.
