Hi

my laptop running XP Pro and IE6 had a disk boot sector
crash, I can get to my files by plugging the disk into a
desktop PC, What I really need is the logins and passwords
that IE remembered, can I recover these any way? I have
looked at some utilities but thay seem to rely on getting
the data from a currently running version of IE not just
the files from a crashed version. Can I simply copy all of
the cookies and temporary internet files to the new PC and
get it to work that way?

Any ideas anyone

Thanks

Colin

Website logins are kept in the cookies, so if you can copy them over you
should be fine, don't see why you would need your temp internet files
though. Keep in mind that cookies are user dependent.

Hi

Cookies copied over OK including index.dat but no saved logins, user id on
the system is the same, as is the email address.

AutoComplete passwords are kept in the Registry in encrypted form and cannot
be transferred.
If you get this program you can look at the data and copy it on paper or
export it to a file:

Thanks Frank

the url seems to be not available at the moment, I'll try later or is there
another link

Thanks

Colin

OK I got the file but it it cannot work as I am loading a different OS and
browsing the disk drive that will not boot , the utility requires a
currently working system and does not seem to be able to recover a failed
one.

Start Regedit and look in Help for
hives
Read all of the information there.
Sorry, but that's the best I can do. If you are very careful about it you
may be able to recover your stuff. Before starting I would make sure you
have a Restore Point established and know how to restore it.

You might try exporting this registry key from the bad HD to the good
system. Backup the registry on the good system first. Website logins are in
this key:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\ Internet Explorer\ IntelliForms\ SPW]
There's not even a {GUID} to modify... it might work.

This is the key from my WinME registry. Your XP registry may not be the
same.
