Recover an Excel file before being saved (Auto Recovery turned on.

In Microsoft Office Excel 2003, I saved a file, and I want to recover an
earlier version, but I can't seem to find a backup, or recover the earlier
version because Auto Recovery has written over it, I think. I couldn't
restore my system either because I dont' have times on system restore, only
days, and I would lost all the work I did the rest of today. Is there a way I
can recover an earlier version of a file, or is ir completely overwritten?

System restore wouldn't help as it does not alter user files on restore.

As I understand it, Excel writes a temp file to the folder in
Tools>Options>Save>Autorecover save location. If the system crashes it tries
to recover the file from here. Once the file is saved by the user the temp
file is recreated from that, effectively there is only ever two versions,
the current temp one and the original one before the last user save.
