"URGENT" ...Cannot Recover Excel File

R

Rodney

I am deperately in need of an Excel "Expert's" assistance.
I have created a rather sophisticated Excel Model in Excel
2002. It has taken just on 18 months to design with close
to 250 Function Formulas. Last night I was working away
inserting new worksheets and an ERROR message appeared.
"Microsoft Excel has encountered a problem & needs to
close" and needs tos hut down.
I wasn't concerned at the time because I have "Auto
Recovery" engaged ... BUT there is a Problem ... the file
won't open and it keeps taking me back to the same error
message. I do have a previous backup but I have done so
much to the program since then.

Is there some way that I can recover this file ... PLEASE
HELP !

I came to this newsgroup to discover if others are
having the same issues as I am having, and your's sound
like identical to mine. I have found a work-around. First
off, I make backup copies of backup copies, with different
names. Secondly, unless I have to, I NEVER use the
recovery feature. Third, my problem seems to be based
primarily on the name I give the file and the depth of the
dirctory structure (that is, the length of the true file
name).
For example, a file named "COPY of reliability
statistics basic started Jan 12 2004" may not open, but if
I shorten the title to "RSB start jan 12 2004" it does
open. Also, if I move a file that I can't open, from my
working directory (many layers down into my directory
structure) to the "desktop", then voila it can be opened.
However, sometimes even that doesn't work and I have to
shorten the name on the desktop too before it will open.
Lovely.
Please let me know if you come up with a true root
cause/fix for this mess.

Hi John,
For example, a file named "COPY of reliability
statistics basic started Jan 12 2004" may not open, but if
I shorten the title to "RSB start jan 12 2004" it does
open.

Try:

Start, run,

"c:\Program FIles\Microsoft Office\Office\Excel.exe" /regserver

(use the quotes, change the path if needed)

I am now having the same problem as before (as Rodney, I assume), except intermittantly --- that is, sometimes the file opens correctly and sometimes not. I created the final version of a 5mb file that I've worked on for months. Now it opens only sometimes, and I sent it to someone by email and he can't open it at all. What we get is the dreaded application error, must close, "recover" screen. The shortening of the name is not working anymore. As for the "..../regserver " command, I can get "run" to open excel if I use that command, but if I add the "/regserver" the next screen to appear is one that says it cannot find "C:\programs". What is "regserver" supposed to do, and is it a one time fix
Thanks, JZ

It helps to read the instructions. I just noticed your instruction to keep the quotes. So I did give that command, and a program window came up saying something about configuring the program. When it closed, I tried again to open a copy of the problematic file, and again I got the same error/close/recover screen.

For my money, AutoRecovery in Office is a function to help fix a broken
AutoRecovery function. I turned it off and now do not have these
recurring problems. I am also convinced that using spaces, hyphens, and
the like in filenames also leads to file corruption.
