Recording sound

Not sure if this is the right place for this type of question but here it is
anyway.

We have connected our stereo to the line in of our sound card. The music
coming through the computer speakers sounds great. However when we record
and play it back it is distorted. We have tried various recording software
but always end up with the distorted playback.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.
