recording sound

I'm trying to record narration. I've attempted in a ppt, audacity and
whickerbill. My mic works for online chat but I cannot get it to record. I've
tried the help center but still no luck. Help please. my presentation is due
in 4 days. Thanks, Rhonda
 
You can try the following:

Double click the Speaker Icon in the system tray > Options > Properties
