Recommend Remote Control Software

I am a tech support person working "out in the sticks" in need of a
recommendation for software to use for remotely controlling the PCs of
my customers. I have not researched this previously because I have been
limited to dial-up on my end. I now have the possibility of getting
Satellite service at 1.5 download speed that also supports VPN use.

I am aware of Remote Desktop, GoToMyPC, etc. I have also seen &
assisted with using software where the end-user is "sent an invitation"
via email to join a remote access session and I like this type of
software--probably best referenced as the "attended" type. However, I
do prefer to work on my customers systems when they are not there so
there is less inconvenience to them--so an "unattended" version is also
appropriate.

If anyone can forward links to info on software they have used,
especially with satellite Internet Access, I would appreciate it!

Also, any failures with software, dislikes, etc, especially with
satellite is helpful.

Thank you!!

I just worked with a client (another IT person who hired me to analyze his
terminal server setup) and he was using a program called logmein, which
worked really well. He sent me an email with a URL that I clicked on that
spawned the remote control session.

Unfortunately, satellite internet access is among the worst for remote
access like Remote Desktop, GoToMyPC... because the conection is very latent,
i.e. the packets take a long time to transverse the connection. Any
connection with latency greater than about .5 seconds (500mS) will be very
slow, i.e. click, wait, open program, wait for screen to paint... if the
latency is > 1 second, it can be virtually unusable.

Take this into consideration when looking at solutions. You can determine
the connection latency with ping.

VNC is another product that could be used.

I have been reading about LogMeIn...did catch my attention.

I am only reconsidering satellite because the company providing it said
VPNs work, when in the past, they have not.

So I am hoping to find another person successfully using satellite for
remotely supporting customers.

Thank you!

RemoteScope network administration software provides powerful time saving
network administration tools such as remote control, remote software
deployment, remote task management, asset management, and more for a much
lower price than other comparable network administration packages.

Have you thought about using VNC Over SSH??
I have implimented this using 2 windows box's and stunnel (free) and
real vnc.
I created a key pair to save using passwords for the tunnel but you
still need to use the vnc password.

Here is the site I used to set it all up..... There are a few places
that they are not 100% clear so if you go this way feel free to e-mail
me and I will be sure to help out.

I use a combination of UltraVNC and Single Click to do client initiated
help sessions (http://ultravnc.sourceforge.net/addons/index.html). If
they want me to have access to the machine without them there I install
the Logmein (free) client. Use FTP for file transfer (FileZilla). Use
notepad or some IM client to chat with them. All free.
