Receiving FAXES with Phone Answering Turned ON

I cannot receive FAXES while my answering machine is turned on. Turn it off
and faxes come in fine and dandy. Is there a way to receive faxes and have
my answering machine on at the same time? I am using Windows XP Home's Fax
Console.

Your issue is *not* with Windows.
Your issue *is* that the answering machine picks up *all* calls -- both
voice and data.
* IF * your answering machine is capable of recognizing the difference
between voice calls and data calls, and *IF* your answering machine is
capable of *ignoring* data calls, then the instructions for enabling that
feature would be found in the manual that came with the answering machine.

OG, I want to thank you very, very much for your very clear and concise
answer to my problem. And also for the unbelievable short time between the
time I asked the question and you answered it. You are one nice guy (or gal
if that is the case).
A friend of mine and I worked for several hours before we even found out it
was our answering machines that were the cause of the trouble.

Many thanks!

I hate to bother you one more time regarding your answer.

As I stated previously I found your response a complete answer to my
problem. However, I have searched the web and cannot find an answering
machine that differentiates between data and voice. Do you have a source for
such a machine that will also block the data?

I once owned a 'box' that sat between the phone line and the Phone/PC that
was able to distinguish between a data call and voice call and direct it
accordingly.
I cannot remember the exact name for such a device

Try Googling variations of "fax data voice switch."

My "Comshare 350" from Staples or Office Depot will direct a fax signal
to the FAX or Modem port. It will switch from a phoneline or from the
answering machine once the fax signal starts, if the answering machine
is connected through the device. It listens during any activity for
that sound. Answering services through the phone company disconnect you
when they respond to a call so nothing would work in that case..

There's also software that would let your computer act as both an
answering machine and a fax.

The problem for me was knowing whether calls were calls or faxes. The
best solution can often be a dedicated fax telephone line. I receive and
send a lot of faxes so it becomes a more economic solution.

Fax software can be a problem. Winfax Pro 10 is good but it will not
work in Vista. It is of course no longer supported by Symantec. Another
market leader down the pan as a result of their development policy for
software acquisitions.

What you need is a fax switch. These detect the fax tones and automagically
redirect the incomming call to an alternative device (in your case the
computer modem).

Experience with these devices shows that when recording the OGM on the
answering machine, leave a couple of seconds silence at the start of the
message. This allows the fax switch to detect the tones without having to
separate it from the OGM.
