Error receiving fax

I have Windows XP Home sp3. I have always been able to send and receive
faxes with the fax service provided. For some reason, now I can't receive
them. My fax will answer on the second ring and connects and starts to
receive, but after about a minute, this appears: An error occurred while
receiving this fax." (It doesn't tell me what the error is). I have checked
all the settings and even had the phone line checked. Does anyone have any
ideas?

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.

Running a fax service on a telephone line not dedicated to fax can be
subject to error as problems can arise in determining what is a
telephone call and what is a fax. Are you sure it was a fax and not a
telephone call? How long have you set the fax service to wait before it
intervenes?

Even with a dedicated fax line you still get problems with incoming
calls but they are manageable. It took me a while to realise that some
incoming calls, which I thought were faxes, were what I now believe to
be an automated dialer cold calls. The dialer gives up if no one answers
the telephone. These calls, even with WinFax Pro, are indistinguishable
from an incoming failed fax.

Hope this helps.

I do have a dedicated line for faxes, although I certainly can receive voice
calls if I know it is a voice call. I also know that if someone is calling
me rather than faxing me, and I let the fax pick it up, it will come through
as an error. I have the fax service set to automatically answer after 2
rings. In the past week, I have been expecting two faxes and they both
failed. In the past, I have been able to send and receive faxes with no
problem, so this is a new occurrence. I'm still hoping I can resolve this.
Otherwise, I will try another fax program I guess. Why would I be able to
send a fax but not receive one??--

Just as a follow-up, I can now receive faxes, although I didn't change
anything. Go figure. :)
