Reboots for no apparant reason

hi,

My laptop reboots for no apparent reason. There is no warning sign, the
screen just goes black, and it reboots. It happens at random times, even when
i am doing nothing.
I have had the laptop for just under 2 years now.I'm pretty sure it's not a
virus, as i have Norton Antivirus version 12.2.0.13.

I am not sure what to do. I haven't moved it recently, its been in the same
place for over 6 months. Although it is a bit cold in the room it is in, the
problem has just occured a few days ago, and i haven't had any problems
before this.
Im not sure if it is overheating, but any hints would be useful.

Thanks

In my personal opinion, Norton *is* a virus and should be replaced by
an alternative product.

Open Control Panel - System - Advanced and click on the Settings
button in the Startup and Recovery (bottom) section. In the Startup
and Recovery window click on the checkbox for "automatically restart"
to clear it. Click on Apply and OK as needed to exit.

That should put an end to the spontaneous reboots. However they may
be replaced by a "Blue Screen Of Death" STOP error. If that happens
then the contents of the STOP message, including the STOP code, all 4
parameters, and any file or module names mentioned will be a direct
clue as to the underlying cause of the problem. Post that information
back here.

Good luck

i have followed your instructions, and they don't happen so often now. I have
moved it off of the desk it was on, and it was fine. There is a radiator
behind the laptop, but it is never on. I have also removed any magnets that
may be in the room as well.
There is no "blue screen of death" it still just goes black, and reboots.

Thanks for the help

If the machine is still rebooting after the "automatically restart"
option has been turned off then the most likely culprit is a hardware
fault, probably with the power supply, motherboard, or CPU.

These types of problems tend to get worse over time, and eventually
lead to total failure.

There may be an event log entry that is relevant to your problems.
Right-click on "My Computer" and select Manage.
Expand the Event Viewer category (click on the + sign) and browse
through each of the sub-categories looking for error events (usually
red-flagged) whose date and time stamps correspond to your reboot
incidents. Double-click on an error record to see the details of
that error.

Good luck

The event viewer has a few red crosses, although the laptop has turned off a
few times today, and it isn't on there. Some of the errors from before the
1st is:

An"application hanging" error: Hanging application WINWORD.EXE, version
11.0.5604.0, hang module hungapp, version 0.0.0.0, hang address 0x00000000.

and "Event system" error: The COM+ Event System detected a bad return code
during its internal processing. HRESULT was C0000005 from line 44 of
d:\qxp_slp\com\com1x\src\events\tier1\eventsystemobj.cpp.

Although these don't happen when the laptop reboots, they are the only
errors that are recorded.

There are also several yellow "warning" triangles most of which are called
"Userenv". details: Windows saved user JOSH\Josh Bolton registry while an
application or service was still using the registry during log off. The
memory used by the user's registry has not been freed. The registry will be
unloaded when it is no longer in use.

Also i think it helps if it is on carpet, as i put it in a different room,
on a carpet, and it worked fine, for at least 8 hours, without rebooting.

Any ideas?
thanks
