system reboots when using CD-RW/DVD drives

i did a search and couldn't find an answer to my particular problem:

recently, when I try to use my CD-RW/DVD drives, my system will start to
read the disc but then reboots. sometimes the burner will start writing onto
the disc but then again, the system reboots.

it's probably related, but my system will randomly reboot itself several
times a day for no apparent reason - I do not receive any error messages on
any of these occasions.

could it be the power supply? thanks in advance for any help.

It most certainly could be the power supply. However, does it reboot if you
leave a disk in the drive, and if so at what point of the start up cycle?

I have tried leaving a disc in the drive while restarting - only once did the
system get thru the booting process - but once I try to burn/read anything,
it'll restart. Most of the time, it'll restart immediately after I put the
disc in, while it's trying to read... then it'll continue to reboot from the
very beginning at the "DELL" page (sorry I am not familiar w/ the technical
lingo) and continue to loop there until I eject the disk.

A note about my current power supply... I just had it replaced a couple
years ago. Do they not last very long??

They vary enormously. Your next one might go on for 10 years. Then again -
it might not.
