Reboot problem: SP2 related?

My son's Micron Pentium III is on XP Professional, and he uses it mostly to
play
games. Since installing SP2, the machine periodically reboots
spontaneously, usually in the middle of a game.

I have a few theories:

1. We share a dial-up internet connection, through another machine.
Sometimes I'll be at the other machine when he gets on, and it will start
dialing on my machine. If I press "Cancel", it affects his machine.

2. WinXP tries to connect to the internet to check for updates, and this
messes up his game somehow.

3. Need a BIOS upgrade?

4. Faulty hardware. I hope this isn't it, but it could be.

Anyone else having this problem?

If you suspect the BIOS may be the problem contact the manufacturer
and see what they say.

Also if toy have a spare hard drive, you could perform a Clean
Installation of Windows XP, then install SP-2.
If the problem remains, you are pretty sure it is hardware.
If the problem goes away, it is most likely software related.

Thanks for the reply. No, there's plenty of space.

I looked up BIOS on Micron's website and it was last revised in 2000. My
new
suspicion is that it just won't run SP2. I'll probably have to reinstall
XP
without it.

But I'd love to hear a better solution...

See replies to another of your many posts here (re: hijackware).

I would not be surprised if a machine with no BIOS upgrades since 2000 would
not play nice with SP2. Have you checked with Micron for SP2-compatibility
for the machine?

I doubt if that's the problem, but I suppose it's possible.
Eileen's BIOS is at least 6 years old, and has no problem with XP
SP2.

I'll probably have to reinstall XP without it.

I wouldn't be quick to remove SP2 until you've ruled out all the
other possibilities, but if you decide to do so, no need to
reinstall. You should be able to remove it from Add/Remove
Programs.

Say hello to Matthew for me.

What about overheating? Are the fans running, all the dust cleared out?
