Reboot pending message

Anyone seen when you attempt to do an update from
WindowsUpdate site the operating system (Win2K pro) gives
a message that says something like:

"a previous installation/reboot is pending, please reboot
to complete the installation and try again"

That is not the exact message, but you get the point. Has
anyone seen this? I have this on multiple machines here
at work - others have no problems.

This will occur when there are PFR's (pending file renames) set to happen at
the next reboot. They can be set by applying hotfixes, updating drivers,
etc.

Some machines will exhibit this behavior and some will not depending on what
has been done on them previously.

Just reboot the machine, the files will get renamed properly, and then you
will be able to continue what you were trying to do.

Trust me, I have rebooted a million times and nothing has
fixed this. Any other recommendations?

Dave,
I've seen this on IE6 upgrade from IE5.5. There info at
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-
us;312444 for that solution, maybe it will work for you.
It has you delete a registry setting in
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session
Manager named PendingFileRenameOperations.
After that reboot and try your install again. Good luck.
