Pending system reboot

When installing some software the installer stops with the message 'The
application has a pending system reboot. Please reboot and restart the
installer.' I have performed several soft and hard reboots. I have also
followed the solution to delete the 'filerenameoperations' key from the
registry. both have not solved the problem.

Is there other registry keys I need to look for to stop this error.

Either look in the registry or use msconfig to check the entries under these
two keys:

\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

See if there are any entries for the software you're installing. As always,
make a backup of the registry before doing any manual changes.

Will this apply even though the error only occurs when the installer is run
and not at any other time. I might be wrong but do these not run at startup
thus making the error appear at start up? (FYI I am working on a different
computer until this is solved and will try your instructions as soon as I can
get to the other computer.)

stick) mobile Broadband dongle.

I'm sorry, I misread your original post. I read that the error message WAS
occurring at start up. My bad!
Does the message reoccur at start up? If so, there probably is an entry in
one of those two keys, or in the Startup folder.

No it does not occur at start up. Only when trying to install the software.
The installer is finding a reboot flag somewhere that is stopping the
installation from carrying on. I would like to add that there are about 6
references to the dongle in the registry. I am tempted to remove all
references to the dongle and see if this helps but due to the length of time
this would take I would like to try other options first. I cannot find any
reference to the software in the registry.

Did Windows prompt you for a driver disc when you plugged it in? According
to the instructions with my IOGear USB 2.1 Micro Adapter, the Bluetooth
stack is included with XP SP2 or later. I plugged mine in on my Win7
notebook and it was found and set up, then it prompted me for updated
drivers, if I had any.
As a test, I just plugged it into my WP SP3 desktop, and it was recognized
and popped up the configuration page. I was never asked for a driver disc
with XP.
You might consider doing a System Restore to before the first time you tried
installing it, then plugging it in and see if it's found on its own.

I would but their support can be rather lacking. In any case I believe this
to be a computer issue. I want to stop the installer from 'seeing' the
reboot, (which isn't needed,) and carry on with the installation. I do not
believe that either will be able to help on this matter and certainly not '3'
(based on previous dealings with them.)

The problem is with the software, not Windows.

Did you insert the accompanying disk into the appropriate drive-bay?

Have you tried unplugging the USB modem?

No it did not. I had to install the drivers from the dongle manually.
There must be some flag or file somewhere that has not been reset causing
this loop. If I could find this I am sure I can stop it. At this rate I am
going have to do a clean install which I do not want to do. I have cleaned
out the temp directories and non of the files on the dongle have been
modified or created as a result of the install so where is this reboot
notification coming from?

I know it is the software that is causing the problem but it must be being
told ,from somewhere, that a reboot is needed and after the reboot this
instruction has not been removed. I want to locate that offending
instruction to stop it.

Other than the registry or the Startup folder, I don't know that it can be
accessed by any normal means. Nothing in MSCONFIG that mentions it? Have you
tried a System Restore to the day before the installation?

It's most likely caused by a Pending File Rename Operations.

Try this:

Rename the PendingFileRenameOperations registry entry at:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager

Verify that the following registry subkeys are empty:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnceEx
