reboot - password

I turned off my computer and when I turned it back on, at
the "gateway" window it prompted me for a password, which
had never happen before. There are two messages on this
screen " To change system settings, press the F1 key and
To display system messages, press the tab key. " Is there
any way to fix this without removing the battery? Thanks

Gateway's web site for information on how to reset the BIOS password.

Then check your computer's user manual. Without the specific model number
of your computer, its difficult to assist you. And I will almost guarantee
that the information you seek can be found either in your owner's manual, or
on Gateway's web site.

It is very unlikely that by simply rebooting your computer now requires
a BIOS password. BIOS passwords have to be set. If you didn't set one,
then I suggest that someone who has access to your computer did
(parents? unpleasant roommate?). There are BIOS cracking programs which
may or may not work - Google for them. The easiest thing to do if this
is a desktop unit - aside from talking to the person who set the BIOS
password - is to remove the battery. Sometimes it will take 1-3 days
for the BIOS to reset to default, sometimes only a few hours. If this
is a laptop, you can try the cracking programs or take it to a computer
repair shop.
