Good Source for Laptop Batterys

Hi,
I recently bought a "new" battery via Amazon from "Battery Clerk" for
my Gateway Solo 3350. The battery I received from them is defective.

I found out via reviews on the web that this company does not have a
good reputation.

When I called (twice) "Battery Clerk", customer service, I hear a
message, "Sorry, no one is available to take your call". I will try again
later and let you know how this turns out.

My Gateway Solo 3350 was new around the year 2000. Can you
recommend a good source for a battery for this old laptop based on
your own experience?

It depends where you live. Larger cities usually have specialist
battery shops (that sell batteries for everything from a jet airliner to
a hearing aid.) You can take your laptop in to see what they can
offer, confident they will not sell you in person a duff battery. (I use
such a local store for my year 2000 Toshiba.)

Rather than waste money and purchase another battery I would have the
vender rectify the situation. Very few customers have acceptable phone
service any more. The best way is to contact them on-line:

BTW: Before you ask for a replacement, just confirm that the problem is
not with your charger. It is common for new batteries to arrive with
considerably less than 100% charge

Have you tried Ebay? I have purchased batteries there and have not been
disappointed. Check the feedback on anyone you consider purchasing from.

I've had very mixed luck with eBay stores... many batteries there are
low quality and don't last very long.

Stay away from http://www.laptopsforless.com/ Their customer service
is HORRIBLE. I had a battery from them that failed to take a charge
after a few months, sent it back under an RMA, and then heard nothing
from them despite many repeated attempts to contact them via chat
support, email, phone.... even their Facebook page. It took 2 months
from the date they received my RMA'd battery, for them to test and
replace the defective battery.... and did not reply to a single contact
I mad for a month.

fine but not very good because of high self discharge and it did this
right out of the box. Two weeks unused and the battery is discharged
down to about 10% and it doesnt make any difference if it is in or out
of the laptop.
I believe that there is a very big difference in the quality of the
cells used to make up the cheaper battery, so be aware of this and dont
go for the very cheapest without research into the cell quality used. I
have a 10" netbook for travelling and the OEM battery in that will
remain at 100% charge for months unused and its now about 4 years old -
so quality cells can do it!

And how! I'll put my signature to what you are saying. Quality and
freshness of course are all important when it comes to batteries. But a
quality battery even when it has warmed the shelves for years will beat
a lesser battery, no matter how new, hands down. I experienced this with
a camera battery. It is just not worth the hassle buying cheapie cheap
batteries.

Exactly.... the cells used in the cheapo batteries are generally low
quality.... that's where the savings comes from. You have to be
prepared for the kind of discharge that you describe, and a shorter
battery life. The ones I tried, by the time the one-year warranty was
up, they either failed or were showing MUCH shorter charge times. So
there was really no savings.... what's the difference between spending
$30 for a battery that is keeping a charge for only an hour after a
year, versus spending $90 for one that doesn't have that sort of
reduction till after 3 years? Nothing.... no savings.
