rearranging files in a folder

I need to manually rearrange a list of items in a file
folder. I.E. I can't use the auto arranging features
(thumbnails, tiles, icons or 'arrange icons by' options)
because some of my lists are over 50 items long so
rearanging them using large icons is not practical and
even
then they automatically revert to their previous order
when in list view. Unchecking auto arrange in 'Arrange
icon by' was suggested but this option is not available
in 'list' view. I could manually arrange files in
the 'list' view when I had Windows 98. I now have XP
Home.
Help!
And thank you!

How many times do you intend posting this same crap?

I need this function all day and I just paid $1500 on a
computer that won't do what my Windows 98 seven year old
computer did with ease.
Is their a way to fix this?
Would a possible keyboard combination that will allow me
to manually drag and drop items in the list into a
differant order in the 'list' view?

After reading the responses to your other posts on this subject and doing
some research. I believe David Candy to be correct in his statement on this
very thread, 'You can't."
