Arranging lists of files in a folder

I need to manually arrange a list of items in a file
folder. I.E. I can't use the auto arranging features
(thumbnails,tiles,icons or 'arrange icons by' options)
because some of my lists are over 50 items long so
aranging them using large icons is not practical and even
then they automatically revert to their previous order
when in list view. I could manually arrange files in
the 'list' view when I had Windows 98. I now have XP
Home.
Help!

As near as I can tell, they will stay the way you manually arrange them
until you close the folder.
Then they will revert to Arrange by: Name, Size, Type or Modified, whatever
you have set, when you open the folder again.
