LISTS

HARRY

I need to manually rearrange a list of items in a file
folder. I.E. I can't use the auto arranging features
(thumbnails, tiles, icons or 'arrange icons by' options)
because some of my lists are over 50 items long so
rearanging them using large icons is not practical and
even
then they automatically revert to their previous order
when in list view. Unchecking auto arrange in 'Arrange
icon by' was suggested but this option is not available
in 'list' view. I could manually arrange files in
the 'list' view when I had Windows 98. I now have XP
Home.
Is this problem fixable?
Help!
And thank you!

Harry,

You are really not being clear here. Is the sort order wrong or you can't
save the sort order?

If the former:

Windows remembers 400 folder settings. When that number is reached some
settings aren't retained any longer. You can change this to 8000 by adding
this edit to the registry.

Run this edit, then reset your preferred folder options:

Increase Folder View Options Limit: (Line 2)
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

To use the Regedit: Save the REG File to your hard disk. Double click it
and answer yes to the import prompt. REG files can be viewed in Notepad by
right clicking on the file and selecting Edit.

Windows Explorer/View/[Select Accordingly]. Then Tools/Folder
Options/View/Apply to All Folders.

If the latter:

Change the Sort Order Back to W2K Style (Line 107)
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

To use the Regedit: Save the REG File to your hard disk. Double click it
and answer yes to the import prompt. REG files can be viewed in Notepad by
right clicking on the file and selecting Edit.

Sort All by Alphabet - Start Menu and Fav's (Line 196)

In list you dont have the auto sort but you can go into
details and right click on the arrange bar at the top and
choose from the list only the "Name" this will give you
the same veiw as list but you will have the arrange list
at the top. If you need to auto arrange them into a
custom lits then the easiest way is to add a prefix to
the file name, Amyfile, Bmyfile,Cmyfile, then click on
the "Name" tag on the top and it auto arranges the list
to alphabetical order click again and it reverses it.

He wants to use small icons which is no longer on a menu. List (which looks like small icons) works like details view. Small icons work like large icons (have a positional attribute). While listview still supports small icons (I spent a few hours looking into it till I saw he's spam) the problem is two

1. Getting an hwindow to the list view control (as it changes every invocation)
2. Explorer may no longer have the code that stores and retrieves settings for this mode.

There was a big pod of dolphins off North Bondi monday morning about 7:30am. 2-3 Kilometers (that's a long way) long and at least two wide.

But they were stupid dolphins. They were heading south, they are supposed to be heading north for a MIA type weekend in the tropics. I called out Flipper but none answered. Anyway all dolphins look alike to me.

I played it through to the end but it didn't cache, so all I heard was stop start noise and fragments of sentences. The second last time it happened Australia was discovered (not that the Australians and Indonesians who lived and traded here found it news worthy). Cap't Cook was here to measure the transit to see how far from the sun was the earth.

Cook's last laugh over Venus clock
Date: June 7 2004

By Richard Macey

The clock on display at the Powerhouse Museum's Sydney Observatory may be the one James Cook took to Tahiti to time the transit of Venus in 1769.

Or maybe not. Thanks to an unfortunate storage incident we may never know.

The Royal Society in England ordered a clock from the manufacturer John Shelton to time the 1761 transit. Trouble is, it had also ordered four others for the planet's repeat performance in 1769, and today no one knows which is which.

All five went into storage together - and were mixed up. "Even experts can't tell them apart," said the observatory's curator, Dr Nick Lomb.

Not that it really mattered, he said, because all five are still historically significant.

The clock made for the 1761 event was used by the astronomer Nevil Maskelyne on the island of St Helena. It was later shipped to the US with Charles Mason and Jeremiah Dixon to survey the boundary between Pennsylvania and Maryland, the Mason-Dixon line. In 1768 it went to sea again, this time to Tahiti with Cook and the HMS Endeavour for the 1769 transit of Venus. By watching Venus touch the edges of the solar disc, mathematicians were able to use geometry to tackle one of science's great questions - the distance to the sun.

"But having the correct time was crucial," Dr Lomb said.

Even in Tahiti, Cook was able to set his Shelton clock to London time by using a telescope to mark the moments when Jupiter's moons vanished and reappeared as they passed behind the giant planet.

The clock now in Sydney, on loan from London's Science Museum and on display at Sydney Observatory's exhibition Transit of Venus, the scientific event that led Captain Cook to Australia, might be the one used by Cook, Maskelyne, Mason and Dixon - or it may be one of the other four. But Dr Lomb is not bothered. "It's still an extremely significant clock."

It was used in 1769 by the British and then again - 113 years later - by the Americans for the 1882 transit.

The exhibition coincides with tomorrow's transit of Venus, the first for 122 years.

There was a big pod of dolphins off North Bondi monday morning about
7:30am.
2-3 Kilometers (that's a long way) long and at least two wide.

But they were stupid dolphins. They were heading south, they are supposed
to
be heading north for a MIA type weekend in the tropics. I called out
Flipper
but none answered. Anyway all dolphins look alike to me.

He wants to use small icons which is no longer on a menu. List (which
looks
like small icons) works like details view. Small icons work like large
icons
(have a positional attribute). While listview still supports small icons
(I
spent a few hours looking into it till I saw he's spam) the problem is
two

1. Getting an hwindow to the list view control (as it changes every
invocation)
2. Explorer may no longer have the code that stores and retrieves
settings
for this mode.

Harry,

You are really not being clear here. Is the sort order wrong or you
can't
save the sort order?

If the former:

Windows remembers 400 folder settings. When that number is reached
some
settings aren't retained any longer. You can change this to 8000 by
adding
this edit to the registry.

Run this edit, then reset your preferred folder options:

Increase Folder View Options Limit: (Line 2)
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

To use the Regedit: Save the REG File to your hard disk. Double click
it
and answer yes to the import prompt. REG files can be viewed in
Notepad
by
right clicking on the file and selecting Edit.

Windows Explorer/View/[Select Accordingly]. Then Tools/Folder
Options/View/Apply to All Folders.

If the latter:

Change the Sort Order Back to W2K Style (Line 107)

To use the Regedit: Save the REG File to your hard disk. Double click

I need to manually rearrange a list of items in a file
folder. I.E. I can't use the auto arranging features
(thumbnails, tiles, icons or 'arrange icons by' options)
because some of my lists are over 50 items long so
rearanging them using large icons is not practical and
even
then they automatically revert to their previous order
when in list view. Unchecking auto arrange in 'Arrange
icon by' was suggested but this option is not available
in 'list' view. I could manually arrange files in
the 'list' view when I had Windows 98. I now have XP
Home.
Is this problem fixable?
Help!
And thank you!

Very interesting, David.)

I played it through to the end but it didn't cache, so all I heard was stop
start noise and fragments of sentences. The second last time it happened
Australia was discovered (not that the Australians and Indonesians who lived
and traded here found it news worthy). Cap't Cook was here to measure the
transit to see how far from the sun was the earth.

Cook's last laugh over Venus clock
Date: June 7 2004

By Richard Macey

The clock on display at the Powerhouse Museum's Sydney Observatory may be
the one James Cook took to Tahiti to time the transit of Venus in 1769.

Or maybe not. Thanks to an unfortunate storage incident we may never know.

The Royal Society in England ordered a clock from the manufacturer John
Shelton to time the 1761 transit. Trouble is, it had also ordered four
others for the planet's repeat performance in 1769, and today no one knows
which is which.

All five went into storage together - and were mixed up. "Even experts can't
tell them apart," said the observatory's curator, Dr Nick Lomb.

Not that it really mattered, he said, because all five are still
historically significant.

The clock made for the 1761 event was used by the astronomer Nevil Maskelyne
on the island of St Helena. It was later shipped to the US with Charles
Mason and Jeremiah Dixon to survey the boundary between Pennsylvania and
Maryland, the Mason-Dixon line. In 1768 it went to sea again, this time to
Tahiti with Cook and the HMS Endeavour for the 1769 transit of Venus. By
watching Venus touch the edges of the solar disc, mathematicians were able
to use geometry to tackle one of science's great questions - the distance to
the sun.

"But having the correct time was crucial," Dr Lomb said.

Even in Tahiti, Cook was able to set his Shelton clock to London time by
using a telescope to mark the moments when Jupiter's moons vanished and
reappeared as they passed behind the giant planet.

The clock now in Sydney, on loan from London's Science Museum and on display
at Sydney Observatory's exhibition Transit of Venus, the scientific event
that led Captain Cook to Australia, might be the one used by Cook,
Maskelyne, Mason and Dixon - or it may be one of the other four. But Dr Lomb
is not bothered. "It's still an extremely significant clock."

It was used in 1769 by the British and then again - 113 years later - by the
Americans for the 1882 transit.

The exhibition coincides with tomorrow's transit of Venus, the first for 122
years.
