Real DOS Prompt?

Michael

Hi,

I'm trying to format my C: drive in W2K. However, when I
try (from the cmd prompt within Windows), I receive a
warning that all my handles will be disabled -- something
I probably don't want (right?).

Anyway, in Win98, you had the option to go into DOS mode
when you booted up. In 2000, I don't see that possibility.

How can I reformat W2K without losing my handles, or is
losing them OK?

Thanks.

There is no DOS in Win2k, so you won't be able to go into real DOS mode.
If you want to have a real DOS, boot on a floppy disk with DOS installed
on it.

What you don't say is more important Michael.
w2k is installed on a different partition then. In that configuration
the boot.ini, ntloader and ntdetect are presumably on your c:\ partition
in the root in hidden files. "Dir /ahs C:\" will show them.

So formating it will get you in trouble. You won't be able to boot any
more. What is the reason for the format? Can't you simply delete
unwanted files and folders?

What what partition type is c:\ fat|fat32|ntfs ?

There is no Dos in w2k. What you have is a cmd shell emulating a dos to
a certain degree.
