Real Audio Mess

Real Audio has messed up my Windows Media Player. I just deleted Real Audio
through control panel but now I can't play things like forwarded voice mail
messages. They try to download in Real Audio and spin the wheels. I just
can't access them. Where do I change my preferences to get rid of this awful
invasive program's remnants and get my system working normally?

Hi
Yes Real Player certainly can f**k things up
use system restore to go back to a point before real player was installed
Here is an alternative to Real Player

Thanks. But system restore was disengaged for security reasons. How else
can I get back to default for playing audios?

You can try using the Set Program Access and Defaults access to disable
Real.

Hi
Apart from delving about in the registry and deleting all occurences of real
player
try installing the player from the link previously given
this should give you back the ability to play real audio file extensions

Thanks, Chas. Yes I could do that. But I hate Real Audio. The way it
insinuates itself into the system as Default audio device really p*sses me
off. If I did re-install it, how do I stop it from being default?

At least it no longer tries to grab control of everything in sight as
Quicktime/iTunes still do whenever they're run.

For RealPlayer, Tools > Preferences > Content > Media Types gives
granular control. The important thing is NOT to tell it that it can be
your universal media player at install time.

You can also go to WMP's Tools Options dialog to grab back media types
at any time. Again, Apple's software tends to ignore such niceties so
it's a continual tug of war.

If you take "Custom" install, you should be presented with a option
for what filet types to allow Real Audio to be the default action. It
(RA) is another aggravation-application. I'd investigate using one
of the Real Audio alternatives that "Raises it's Hand", instead of
Real Audio overtaking the PC's multimedia functions.

Change the program association for the file RA is trying to play to the
program you want from My Comuputer | Tools | Folder Options | File types.

Thanks, Mike. Simple and effective. That solved it. Now I don't ever have
to deal with Real Audio again.
