If your audio CDs won't play - perhaps you do not have "Use digital CD
audio" enabled in your CD drive's hardware properties, and do not have an
analog audio cable going from your CD drive to the sound card CD input.
You need either the digital audio enabled or an analog cable before the
audio can get from your CD drive to the sound card.

As to the no startup or shutdown sounds (why complain about this?) -
these may just be set to "none" in your current sound scheme.

If you can play a WAV or MP3 file your sound card is probably okay, but
you may need to reinstall the driver - it may not be the correct one for
your particular hardware.

hi experts,

i have similar problem as david that i can't 'Apply' the GS Wavetable in the
Sound setting panel. once i exit from the setting and goes in back to the
setting, the selection is blank again. my Volume icon also missing from the
task bar. all this happened after i uninstalled a small program.

anyone know how to edit the registry manually so that it can select the
default GS Wavetable?

thanks.
