Problem with Microsoft GS Wavetable SW Synth

Hi.

Using XP Pro (SP2)/SigmaTel C-Major Audio

Having a problem for a view days now, and no matter what I am doing it
just don't see to work.

Problem:
Windows-sounds are not played anymore.
Every other sound is played perfectly fine, no matter what program I
using.

Also:
(1a) I cannot choose "Microsoft GS Wavetable SW Synth" as "Default
device" for "MIDI music playback". After choosing from Select box,
closing "Sounds and Audio Devices Properties" and opening it again the
selection is empty
(1b) same happens with the selection for "Default device" for "Voice
playback"
(2) I cannot preview any chosen sounds in tab "sounds" anymore, the
button to play the chosen sound is grayed
(3) no matter how often I try to check the box for "Place volume icon
in the taskbar" the volume icon is never placed and none of my buttons
on my keyboard controlling the volume (mute-button) do work anymore

All drivers seem to be installed perfectly and running.
I don't know what to do anymore.

I need help.
Thnx.

Hey everyone.

I found a solution ... at least it worked on my computer, it maybe
different on yours, but give it a try.
Reading the huge amount of postings here and elsewhere, I figured it
had to have something to do with missing entries in the
windows-registry. Gladly I have 2 computers and was able to compare the
entries of both.

Here is what I found needed to be in the registry but was missing on my
laptop completely:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
NUMBER #1:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Key:
\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Multimedia

This Key (inclusing subkeys and all its values) was completely missing
and has to be a complete copy of the following key:

\HKEY_USERS\{-different-on-every-system-try-the
longest-number-}\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Multimedia

(copy all subkeys and all values ... and if you cannot copy you have to
add all of them manually)

XP seem to have a problem with updating Registry-Settings when the
expected key isn't found where expected. Instead of adding because the
key and values aren't found it just doesn't do nothing at all.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
NUMBER #2:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Add the following Value to the following Key:
\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\drivers.desc

Entry: "midimap.dll" with the String-Value: "midimap.dll"

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
NUMBER #3:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Add the following Values to the following Key:
\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\Drivers32

Entry: "midimapper" with the String-Value: "midimap.dll"
Entry: "wavemapper" with the String-Value: "msacm32.dll"

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Next Step
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Restarting the computer didn't do it, I had to start the
DirectX-Diagnosis-Tool "dxdiag.exe" (you'll find in your folder
"{Windows}\System32"), not quite sure why.
Since then I have my sound back.
I can change the settings again and even the icon in the taskbar is
visible and usable again.

Hope it helps.
