Partial audio functionality

Frood

I installed and uninstalled a very stupid video capture
program called Pico 2000. The dumb thing partially
screwed up my audio and I can't get it back. Here are
the symptoms:

- Windows sounds (eg Asterisk, Startup, etc) do not play,
even though they are configured to.
- The Sound Recorder application cannot play or record
anything (buttons greyed out)
- In the Multimedia Control Panel under the Audio tab,
the Default Device for MIDI music playback is always
blank. I can select items from the dropdown, but if I
click OK and open it up again, it will be blank. The
same thing happens with Voice playback under the Voice
tab.
- Attempting to play any audio file with SoundForge
results in the error "An unknown error occured opening
the 'Wave Mapper' device."
- Windows Media Player 10 couldn't play mp3s because it
was missing a codec with tag 55. I installed some third-
party codecs which resolved this issue.
- DirectSound works 100%. I went through dxdiag and
tried all levels of audio acceleration, including
software. All tests passed.

I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling my audio
drivers (nForce) but it doesn't help.

I tried installing SP2, but it didn't help this problem.

Nothing relevant appears to be muted in any of the audio
control panels.

Any suggestions?

Tried everything under "Where did my sounds go" but still
no luck.

Why would DirectSound work but not the Wave Mapper?

Sorry those didn't help. I don't know the answer to your question.

Why don't you try physically removing the audio card. Reboot. Remove
the drivers. Reboot. Then put the card back in.

My audio is on-board (nVidia SoundStorm) so I can't
remove it. However I tried temporarily disabling it in
the BIOS but it didn't help.

Guess it's time for a format :(

Reboot. Remove

Ok, good luck.

I managed to fix this stubborn problem by performing a
Windows repair from the XP Pro CD. I slipstreamed SP2
and my nForce drivers into my XP Pro CD and booted from
it, choosing to Repair my current installation.

Audio settings now look correct in the Multimedia Control
Panel. And, most importantly, both DirectSound and Wave
Mapper audio work!

Great, glad you got it fixed.
