Real Alternative == Real Player, only stripped down and repackaged. The
actual code is still the same.

A question...My understanding is that Real Alternative is a wholly
independent media player. That is, the software is not a stripped down,
repackaged "Real Player."

The only connection between the two is that Real Alternative uses Real
Player's codec (property of RealNetwork). Is this incorrect?

Minor quibble here: Real Alternative isn't a "media player" -
it's *just* the codecs. You still need a separate media player
to play the Real format files.

That's what I understand.

I've read rumours that Real Alternative is encouraged, or even
fed, by Real in order to ensure that their corporate licencees
(like the BBC) won't be faced by an annoyingly loud lobby of
RealPlayer haters who can't access the format.

Dunno about that, but even if it's true it seems that
RealAlternative lets one look at Real files without any of the
RealPlayer annoyances. Good enough for me.

Doh! Sounds like a sizeable "quibble" to me. <grin> Thanks for
setting the record straight.

in part...
Thank you for that information.. if this is indeed without pestering ads
and message pop ups, it just made my site's list for media players.

John,
Haven't seen any pestering ad nor any msg popups. I blocked all
outgoing connections except to a few sites, including my daughters
uni, and logged everything. The FW log is clean. 2 months is a
reasonable time to conclude that RPEE is itself free from spyware.

Ad-aware, Spybot, etc. etc. all returned a clean scan after RPEE
was installed.

The only thing I noticed is that the installed codecs *appear* to be
1 release behind the normal RP (v11 rather than v12). However,
it has played every RP stream/video thrown at it so far.

There was a story going around that the UK's BBC version of RP
was clean, however, when I downloaded it & the normal RP from
Real both files were *exactly* the same size ... about 12mb. RPEE
is only about 8mb.

Cheers
Bazza...
