Real Alternative codecs

We sometimes see people ask about problems with RealAlternative,
and the solution is usually to update the codecs.

I found an example of how quickly the real codecs can change, even
for simple audio feeds which are nothing special at all.

There's a link to an audio clip on this page (the story's self-
explanatory) -- http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/wales/5167878.stm --
which didn't work for me under RealAlternative 1.48, but does under
1.49.

Gotta keep them codecs updated....

The answer is never to use Real for anything. Pretend it doesn't
exist. Eventually, it will go away.

I think I'm beginning to latch onto your advice. I downloaded the
latest version and all it wants to do is update the codecs every other
minute. It's a pain in the arse. Any other solutions?

That'd be nice, except that the only realistic scenario for Real to
go away is if Microsoft manage to monopolise it out of existence in
favour of their proprietary format.

Horses and courses, but depending on one's view of MS and the
world, that could be even worse than having Real around.

Real Player, or Real Alternative?

AFAIK, the latter doesn't nag for updates. (At least, I've never
had nags with the latter -- I just update the codecs when I'm doing
computer maintenance, or when something seems broken.)

does it still FORCE me to remove original Real Player?

I would like to test side by side, maybe the codecs quality is
getting better as the time goes by.

Thorsten

I don't know -- I've never tried (or wanted, to be honest) to run
them side by side. It's a good point, though.

If you do manage to do this, I'd be really interested to know what
you think of the comparison. (It doesn't impact on me all that
much, as I only really use Real for the BBC voice feeds.)

I still have Real Alt v1.42 installed and that link works fine.

Real was the first big name and dominant in the streaming media business.

Then MS came up with its own media.. wmv wma and others...

Real lost the media game... and its a shame.. because it was due to bad
decisions. For example their players were huge, bloated and with too much
advertisement, nags, and pop ups. That made people go away from it...

If Real was smart it would have kept is players slim and user friendly....
and find other ways to produce income.

They lost millions of dollars and are probably blaming it on microsoft....

Quite right. There was nothing wrong with the quality of the Real
streaming process, in a technical sense. They just screwed
themselves with bloated, propriatory, ad-infested software that
wanted to phone home every five minutes. I stopped using Real
years ago.

Do ANY of you understand the difference between RealPlayer and Real
Alternative? From the comments in the thread, I'd say "no."

Unforuntely, we can't forget that Real even exists because there are
still many sites which use Real for audio/video streaming.

I love Real Alternative because I can play Real Audio/Video streams &
not have to use Real's properitory player which is bloated, wants to
phone home, et al.

Real won't go away until all people stop using Real on their websites
for audio/video streaming but if they do go away, we will only be left
with Windows Media for audio/video streaming.

Actually they do:

RealPlayer Enterprise Edition
http://forms.real.com/rnforms/products/tools/red/index.html

Enter FAKE name, email addy, etc. to get to download page.

I have it installed & it does NOT call home (at least it hasn't done so since I
installed it about 2-3 months ago), store RP cookies or anything bad. In fact,
it doesn't even have a "Update Me" option ... that I can find anyway.

I choose to install RPEE on a new PC rather than RA because the uni my
daughter goes to changed the WAY they delivered their RM streams &
neither MPC nor WinAMP (with RP plugin) would work anymore.

More RP info here:

Ah! But you can. You just pretend that those sites do not exist. I
do it every day. I don't seem to be suffering any terrible
hardship because of it.

Thank you for that information.. if this is indeed without pestering adds
and
message pop ups, it just made my site's list for media players

Real Alternative == Real Player, only stripped down and repackaged. The
actual code is still the same.

RA is a commendable effort, but cutting off the horns and the tail with
a hacksaw does make Real any less evil. The only long term solution is
to not support it.

I know this, I have read it before

... this is peanuts compared to what they could generate if they were smart.

This money will evaporate... money made like this never does any good.
