reading Word 2000 Documents on XP

I am trying to transfer some older documents from my
computer with Word 2000 on to my new computer with XP.
It says it cannot read the document. what can I do?

Do you have Word installed on both systems. If Word 2000 is installed on
your old system but you don't have it installed on XP you must install it on
the computer on which XP is installed in order to be able to open the
documents.
