Reading CDRW disks on older CDrom?

C

Colin

I'm running XPhome and I saved some data files to a CDRW disk that was
formatted with Direct cd.

I tried to read the disk on a friends older Pentium 1 computer and it showed
up as a blank cd.

Is there a way for me to be able to get his cdrom to recognize my Direct cd
disk so he can get the files off of it? (I don't want to waste a CDR just
for a few files.)

Thanks for any info

Colin

You need a UDF software update. Some old CDROMs don't have
a sensitive reader and won't read CD-RW disks at all. CD-R
disks are a little more reflective and can be read.

Your problem could therefore be lack of software to read the
Direct CD format or an old CDROM.

You can download a UDF reader from www.roxio.com and you can
buy a new CDROM very cheap. In fact, why not buy your friend
a $40 CD-RW drive for being so nice to let you use his
computer.

He would have to have Direct CD or a udf file system reader program
installed on his machine. For the purpose, the free udfread from either
the Adaptec site or the roxio one would do the trick.

But there is in addition always a possibility on a machine of that age
that the drive itself is not 'Multiread' and physically cannot read a
CD-RW.

Did it say that for win98se? What they describe as happening will only
happen if the drivers are available to install. I would install the drivers
to be sure they are there and ready to use. If it still doesn't work than I
would suspect the CDROM needing an upgrade, and like Colin said, they're not
all that costly.

Oops...like Jim said.

Sorry Jim :)

It's now problem, I can't even keep by sons names separate.

Jim
Saw a CD-RW for $19 on the web the other day, with software.

Thank you all for your response. I tried another cdrw disk and this time it
installed the udf reader and now it reads all cdrw disks. Now I just have to
figure out what kind of memory he needs so I can help him upgrade his
memory.

Thank you all again

The memory type can be determined by getting one or even
both of these free programs.

Bel Arc Advisor www.belarc.com
AIDA32 from http://www.aida32.hu/aida32.php

These will report the motherboard make, model and serial
number and the type of memory installed. You can use the
information directly or you can plug it into the memory
finders that Crucial and Kingston have.
