I have a CDRW/DVD drive that does not recognise blank CD-Rs or CDs that I
have burnt, but it can read some manufacturers CDs.

Specification
Windows XP SP2 (used to have Nero installed but I have removed it)
CDRW/DVD = TSST corp TSH492B

This is definitely not a hardware issue since I removed the hard disk and
put it into an identical machine (where CD was working) and it still doesn't
work.
I also tried just swopping CDRW with an identical model that was working in
another machine - no luck.
Also checked the CD driver and ther is no update and nothing to roll back.

I know that now this is a Windows XP issue since I have removed Nero and run
the Nero Cleanup utilities. What windows XP system drivers do I need to read
the CDs and where do I find them

Many thanks

Were your CD-R's originally burned with Nero..?
Did you ever try to update Nero and InCD..?
What prompted you to remove Nero..?

I removed Nero (after updating Nero and trying various fixes from their
website, reinstalling an old version of Nero that used to work on this
machine) since I thought that this was adding an extra layer of
complication. Windows XP cannot read CDs that are burnt using Nero. I know
that it is not an issue with Nero CDs since an identical machine with an
identical CDRW can read the CDs (this machine has never had an CD burning
software installed) and other machines with Nero installed can read the CDs.
Also, it does not recognise blank CDs and it used to - so can't be the CD
manufacturer either.

Hi,

After you have run the Nero General Clean Up tools, it should clean all the
residual nero files in the OS.
Pls take the following actions:

1. Run regedit and navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

Delete the Lower Filters key as well as the Upper filters keys, if any.

2. Then, navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Ahead

Delete the Ahead folder

3. Exit regedit and then reboot to Safe mode and log in as administrator.

4. Go to Device Manager and then unistall the CDRW/DVD drive, then
uninstall other optical drive as well, if any.

5. Double click the IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers, uninstall the Secondary IDE
Channel (CARE: I assume your CDRW/DVD drive is attached to this channel, if
you are not sure where is your optical drive is attached to, don't take any
action on this part)

6. Reboot the PC to normal startup, Windows should find new hardwares and
install the proper drivers. Be patient, wait untill Windows installed the
drivers and confirmed that the hardware is ready to use.
Go to Device Manager again to ensure DMA mode is enabled for your optical
drive.

Test to ensure your CDRW/DVD drive can read blank CDR disk & the CDR disk
that you have burnt previously.

You can download the latest Update Version of your Nero and then install it
directly by using the S/N keys of your exisiting version of the Nero CD. The
latest InCD version is 4.3.20.1
CARE: you must disable any antivirus software to run at the background
before installing the Nero software.

Pls post back to NG for the outcome, good luck.

Peter
