Read only on XP

Hi there.

I have a Windows 2000 Domain controller, with SP4. On it I have a directory,
on which I have given full permissions to the administrators group and one
other group only. The same directory is shared to administrators and that
group only.

All clients on the network are Windows XP pro with SP2.

Whenever a user tries to access the files in the shared directory from XP
pro worklstation, and open a file- the file shows as read only and it opens
very slow. Later they cannot save the changes because it’s read only. The
files themselves are not read only, I have checked them on the server. The
users belong to the group and have both full file access permissions and full
sharing permissions.

I have disabled the Windows Firewall on XP machines and temporary
uninstalled the antivirus software for testing purposes. But the files are
still showing as read only and open up very slow.

Please help.

Salut, Slim.

Since my previous post I have made a lot of research. Below I will paste the
summery of my work, it includes some workarounds you might want to try and
links to relevant articles. Pay closer attention at the OpLocks control
changes described towards the end of my post.

===
This behavior is described in Microsoft articles ID# 328170 and 814112 and
is a result of Microsoft confirmed flaws in the SMB (Server Message Block),
Opportunistic Locks and Microsoft Windows XP Shell Column Handler. Both
articles claim, that flaws have been corrected in SP2. However, the
workstations running XP Pro already had SP2. I have also re-installed the
SP2, but it did not solve the problem. I have also reinstalled SP4 on the W2K
server, but that did not make any difference either. I have temporarily
uninstalled all antivirius software, to make sure that there is no network
drive scanning service delaying the file read.

Also, article ID# 328170 mentions a patch which is available upon request
only, and not available for download. I have tried other workarounds
suggested in the same article, i.e. setting the folder view to windows
classic and temporarily renaming the following registry key:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder\Shellex\ColumnHandlers\{24F14F01-7B1C-11d1-838f-0000F80461CF}

Changing to:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder\Shellex\ColumnHandlers\{24F14F01-7B1C-11d1-838f-0000F80461CF}-disable

I have also tried applying the patch suggested in article# 814112, but since
I already had SP2 installed, the OS told me that the patch I am trying to
install is an older version that the one that I already have.

The article 812513 also mentions a hotfix, which is available only upon
request, and not for download.

I have also tried to disable Opportunistic Locks requests.
I have added the following key to my domain controller (W2K, SP4):

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanServer\Parameters\ EnableOplocks (REG_DWORD set to 0 )

And the following key to the workstations:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\MRXSmb\Parameters\
OplocksDisabled (REG_DWORD set to 1).

After that the files were not opening as read only anymore, and I am able to
save the changes. However, there are still delays in opening and sometimes in
closing the Word files.

I have also followed the instructions in article# 829700 and added the
mentioned entries into the registry, which also did not have any effect.
