Files on server opening randomly as read only

I have a single Windows 2000 Server running as the domain controller and
file server for a small network. Workstations on the network that access
files on the server are: 1 XP Pro and 1 W2K Pro (that are domain members)
and 2 OS10.2 Macs. All users have full file permissions to the server share
volume. On the XP Pro machine when the user finds and opens files (word XP
and excel XP docs) on the server shared volume with Windows explorer
sometimes files open as Read Only. This happens randomly about 20% of the
time and only on the XP Pro machine. It also happens to files that are used
exclusively by the XP Pro user, so doesn't seem to be caused by sharing
files with Macs. When it happens, if the user closes the file and reopens
it, will often open as is should with the proper privileges. This behavior
began the 1st week of August and has continued to happen since the
installation of XP SP2. The other only thing that might have changed on the
network, the server and the workstations is installation of other Windows
security patches. Any help with correcting this problem would be
appreciated. Thanks, Lee

stops it being read only but thats a real pain. If i find the solutio
to this problem i will let you know

It will always open "read-only" if the same file is already open in another
process.
